Bampton Society was founded in 1989 as a civic society dedicated to the conservation of Bampton with its surrounding countryside and footpaths, and to the enhancement of local amenities and services.

The Society arranges meetings designed to inform, consult, educate, and entertain with topics of local interest. All are welcome.
The Society is a member of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Note: The next President of CPRE is set to be the best-selling American author Bill Bryson. Info here.
Meetings are held on the second Wednesday in alternate months at St. Michael's Community Hall, commencing at 7.30pm, except where indicated below. The Society also organises monthly walks.
Public Rights of Way: An excellent inter-active map is available which shows all public rights of way.
Regular newsletters are provided to keep members informed.

The society is considering the organisation of talks in Bampton given by WEA lecturers. There is a very wide variety of topics available. If you are interested, please let us know.

You can email WEA South Western District for more information, or look at the WEA web-site by clicking on the logo on the left. Contact Exeter WEA office phone no.: 01392-420188

To help supplement its funds, the society also runs a secondhand bookstall at various Bampton events. We are always glad of donations of books - and of course, customers to buy them!

On the occasion shown left, the 'Secret Gardens' weekend, over £70 profit was made from the cheap secondhand books sold!

Visit to Simonsbath Mill

Simonsbath Mill - the leat walk

An unusual (for them as well as us!) visit in May 2002 was to a local factory in Bampton. This was well attended, and after various groups toured the works and the research area, the general manager, David Sykes, gave an interesting talk in the Community Hall.

None of us realised the extent of the operation here in Bampton. Globol Aircare employs around 125 people, but at busy times this can rise to 190. They make over 40 different products, which equated to more than 2 million units last year. They supply many well known retailers such as Asda, Somerfield, Safeway, Tesco, Boots, Betterware, Virgin, Kleeneze, and Reckitt Benkiser, and they also have an extensive export business.

Our thanks to Mr Sykes and his colleagues - also for the free samples!

Walks

For the sixth year a series of 12 monthly walks to take place on the third Sunday of every month. The walks vary in distance from 3 to 8 miles. We usually share cars from Bampton where necessary. There have been some requests for mid-week walks or Saturday walks and some shorter walks - if you are interested email us and we'll see what could be arranged if there is sufficient demand.

Except where otherwise stated, all walks meet at Station Road Car Park in Bampton at 9.30am.
