17th April 2006 (Easter Monday)
On Easter Monday, 17 April 2006, the annual Bampton to Tiverton road race will be celebrating its 60th anniversary, and Tiverton Harriers Athletic Club are determined to make it an extra-special occasion. The legendary runner Bruce Tulloh will be participating in the event and may even compete in the race. We would love to get as many people as possible in Bampton involved (Bampton AFC are providing the marshals) and I'm sure many local runners would love to enter the race, because it is as much a Bampton event
as it is a Tiverton one.
For more information, and a downloadable entry form go to the Tiverton Harriers web-site at
http://www.tivertonharriers.org/roadrace.php
I would also be very interested to learn whether there are any relatives of Mr E. Collacott, the former licensee of the White Horse Hotel (or his daughter Miss Sheila Collacott), still living in the Bampton area, because we would like to offer them a special invitation to attend the start of the race and/or the prize-giving in Tiverton. The reason for this is that Mr Collacott was a great supporter of the Bampton to Tiverton road race in the 1940s and 1950s, and we would love to re-establish and acknowledge this link with the past and the history of the race.
In addition, if anyone from Bampton has any memories of the race they would like to share, I would love to hear from them, because I am in the process of writing a history of the race.
