A History of Clayhanger (Published April 2020) This new booklet is available for download here. It covers the history of this small hamlet near Bampton from the Romans, the Saxons, and the Normans to cover Dernscombe Chapel, Nutcombe Manor, the parish church, local charities, the change in population, etc. There are no fewer than 8 appendices with detailed information. It is very remarkable how much has been discovered about this tiny parish (population 127 at the last census) which is one of Bampton's five-parish group, the Hukeley Mission Community.

A New Short History of Bampton, Devon Published by: Fort Press ISBN 978 0 9535674 5 4 Available at the Heritage Centre. "We visited you on 8th.May this year, you conducted us around Bampton and we enjoyed a wonderful day. Thank you! Before leaving I purchased two books by Mr. Francis, Roman to 17th.Century Bampton and A New Short History of Bampton, read them and was unexpectedly excited by them. Many guide books of this nature seem to be based upon odd scraps of information and you finish them wishing they had gone deeper. Not so Mr. Francis' books. Without being overly academic, they are really scholarly and yet the sort of book you cannot put down. The depth of research shines through and the well sited illustrations sufficient to help the understanding and compliment the text. Bampton should be very grateful to have these among your sales items, as I am sure you are. " Chulmleigh & District Local History Society |
