Bickleigh - Devonshire's Heartland
Bickleigh is located close to the centre of the county
of Devon, just 12 miles from Bampton. It is a picturesque spot on the banks
of the River Exe where it is joined by the River Dart. A very pretty bridge
spans the river. There is plenty to enjoy at Bickleigh, and some excellent places
to eat.
We're told that the model railway display is not to
be missed!
Bickleigh Mill
A restaurant and light refreshments,
a display of a working water mill, picnic area, craft and gift centre. |
|
Bickleigh Castle
A Royalist stronghold spanning 900 years of history - 11th century
chapel, Cromwellian arms and armour, museum of 19th century rural life and toys,
a moated garden.
Devon Railway Centre
A station that time forgot!
Train rides, large model railways, museum,
shop, and refreshments. In fact, something for all the family.
Also see our railway page.

Fisherman's Cot
Next to the bridge is the Fisherman's Cot where visitors can
sit by the river. Paul Simon who stayed here in the 1960's (remember those?)
watched the Exe rushing past and - can this be true? - was inspired to write
the classic song "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Well no, it actually
isn't true (although he did stay there) - but it makes a good story when
you are watching the water tumbling past you.
