Fishing

Fishing at Clatworthy

In the area around Bampton, there is a wide variety of fishing available, from the swift flowing rivers to the lakes and reservoirs.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout is available all the year around in some lakes, and for the coarse fisherman, fishing for tench, roach, bream, perch, rudd, and carp is available in many areas.

Fishing at Wimbleball

Some fisheries boast feisty fish: carp to well over 20lb, tench to over 8lb.

Fishing at Clatworthy

Fishing is a popular past-time at our two local reservoirs just a few miles north east of Bampton, at Wimbleball and Clatworthy (shown on the right). Many of the places to stay in Bampton can give you local knowledge of the best places to fish. For more information, contact the Tourist Information Centres. A leaflet is available which lists no less than 22 places to fish in Mid Devon.

Four Ponds Fishery

Exe valley Fishery logo

The Exe Valley Fishery is just 2 miles from Bampton.

It was established in 1885 and is one of the oldest trout farms in Britain. Three lakes are available for fishing, and only a small charge is made for access to the lake - thereafter you 'pay for what you catch' at a reasonable price per pound of fish actually caught.

The Shop at the fishery sells not only fish, but also smoked fish and fish pate. There is also a good selection of tackle, and a limited range for hire.
