Cycling

Mid Devon, in the heart of the west country, has some of the loveliest and probably least known countryside in the region.

Not recommended on rough roads!

On a bicycle, you can explore at your leisure the lanes, villages, and river valleys, and from higher points enjoy extensive rural views.

The SPAR shop in Bampton is an official stamping point for national cycling networks.

From Bampton, two cycle routes have been prepared and details can be found in a leaflet 'Cycling in Mid Devon' (see the Mid-Devon Tourism web-site).

Both these circular routes take you along river valleys:

1. The Exe Valley

A 16 mile tour taking a scenic route between Bampton and Tiverton with good views and wonderful countryside - about half the route follows the River Exe down a wooded valley. There are some steep climbs mixed with some gentle stretches.

2. The Lowman Valley

This is a longer route of some 23 miles, exploring many lanes and picturesque villages and hamlets, again between Tiverton and Bampton (actually Huntsham which is only a mile or two from the town). There is plenty of scope for variety if you have your O.S. map with you.

3. West Country Way

National cycle route 5

Bampton is on this cycle route which is a 250 mile one from Padstow to Bath and Bristol.

4. Cycling on Exmoor

Cycle hire

There are various organisations to help you organise a cycling holiday or to hire you cycles.

They can organise accomodation, and the safe transfer of luggage.
